Open Seven Days, Seven Nights

A red neon sign in a shop window reads “Ouvert 7 jours 7 soirs”, which means open seven days, seven evenings.

The sign never goes dark.

Ouvert 7 jours, 7 soirs. Open seven days, seven evenings. It glows red long after the rest of the street has gone to bed.

Past midnight, a nurse finishes her shift. A student needs batteries. The light is for them.

Behind it:

  • a family that takes turns
  • a till that has seen everything
  • a regular who needs milk, and a few words

Small businesses rarely make the headlines. They make neighbourhoods.

Here is to the shop that stays open, so the street feels a little less empty after dark, and a little more like home.
